A practical way to decide whether an online course is worth the money and time: define your goal, check the evidence, compare costs and free alternatives, and spot misleading marketing.

Online courses range from free university lectures to expensive programmes promising a new career. Some are excellent; others mostly sell the dream. Deciding whether one is worth it comes down to what you want from it and whether the course can realistically deliver.

Step 1: be clear about your goal

Step 2: check what employers actually ask for

Look at 10 to 20 job adverts for the role you want. Note the qualifications, tools and experience they ask for. If adverts mention a specific certification or degree, a general course certificate may carry little weight. The National Careers Service has job profiles listing typical routes into each career.

Step 3: judge the course itself

Step 4: compare the full cost

Include fees, materials, software, exam fees and your time. Then compare with:

Step 5: watch out for misleading marketing

Search for independent reviews and ask in professional communities. Under UK consumer law, businesses must not mislead consumers, and the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 strengthened the rules on fake reviews.

A simple worth-it test

  1. Write down the outcome you want and when.
  2. Estimate the benefit: a pay rise, a new job, or time saved.
  3. Estimate the full cost, including your time.
  4. Ask: is there a cheaper or free route to the same outcome?
  5. Try free material from the same teacher or provider first.

Questions to ask the provider

A good provider answers clearly. Vague answers, or reluctance to share outcomes, are a warning sign.

Cancellation rights

When buying online from a business, you usually have 14 days to cancel. For digital content, you may lose this right once you start accessing it, if you agreed to that. Read the terms before you start.
